Crab Mentality And It’s Meaning

Tatay Fredo, or the “teacher scavenger” has long been a victim of this phenomena. Well, I hate to say this, but expect me to write an article about this one. (:

The word CRAB MENTALITY is used to label a kind of egotistic, short-sighted thinking which runs along the lines of “if I can’t have it, neither can you.” This term is widely used among Filipinos, who use it explicitly to refer to individuals who pull other people down, belittling them rather than letting them get forward or pursue their dreams. As an over-all rule, a denunciation of having a crab mentality is a pitiable reflection on someone’s persona.

Visualize a pot of live crabs being cooked in boiling water. Struggling for survival, all of them would certainly try to survive. One crab could no doubt climb its way out of the pot. But this is not easy, because the other crabs underneath him would not let him escape.
